It’s very unusual for me to openly criticise another company, as my motto has always been that the market is large enough for all – but I’m making an exception in this post More and more, I’m helping people recover after becoming victims of these large companies, who have taken thousands or tens of thousands from small business owners, delivering absolutely no return. I’m going to break down how these companies will try and sell to you, and what the likely result would be if you bought.

Premium listings – Worth it or not?

Yellow Pages back in their heyday was probably one of the most important places to list your business if you wanted people calling you. The listings would have paid for itself over and over again. In the age of the internet and smart phones, the majority of people aren’t opening the Yellow Pages, they are going to Google, or getting recommendations on Facebook.

It would be silly of you not to take Yell up on their free listing offer, as they will deliver some value over your lifetime. The premium packages however are priced at a point where Yell just cant provide the volume of phone calls to ever give you a good return on what you’re paying. Be aware that once you signup for your free listing you will receive multiple calls from very friendly Yell representatives offering you discounts, promising you the world – all whilst locking you into a 12 month contract of receiving no results. Website Management and SEO

Whilst their websites are very simple, for many businesses, that is all they need, somewhere to put their contact details and a few photos of their work. Yell charges about 4 times what any standard web company would charge for a website and maintenance, so whilst they are over priced, they still deliver a product you can use.

The problem comes with their SEO services – they will promise you great results for “as little as £10 a day” or “top rankings for as little as £29 a day” – they quote in daily figures because they know £300/month is a lot, (perhaps a new van lease), and £900 is staggering (paying your mortgage and bills). The problem here isn’t the cost, because if they can bring you £10,000 a month in extra business, you can afford it.
